Picture Book Month - Day 11 author!

For Day 11, I'd like to introduce a more recent author/illustrator Melanie Watt.  She is has published 18 books since her first in 2001.  What I love about her books is the humor.  These are wonderful books to read aloud and children find them hilarious.

Her first children's book quickly became a story time favorite of mine  for the theme of colors or being yourself.  Leon is a chameleon who can't seem to blend in. The other chameleons change to fit their environment, "But not Leon.  When Leon sat on a green leaf, he turned red...Leon didn't do this on purpose.  He wanted to be the same as the other chameleons. He just couldn't help turning the opposite color."  When Leon and the others get lost in the desert, however, Leon is the only one who can be seen by their parents.  Leon is the hero and "This time, being different made Leon feel proud."

Scaredy Squirrel came along in 2006.  Many children have seemingly irrational fears, but they will laugh aloud at Scaredy Squirrel who seems to be afraid of everything.  The first page of the book, before the title page features this label: "Warning! Scaredy Squirrel instists that everyone wash their hands with antibacterial soap before reading this book."  Since he is so afraid of everything, Scaredy Squirrel stays in his nut tree along with his emergency kit.  One day a "killer bee" approaches and Scaredy is forced out of his comfort zone.  So far, there are 4 Scaredy sequels.

Chester  was published in 2007 and features the title character, a large cat, trying to take over the book from Melanie Watt.  She is trying to tell the story of some mice, but this egotistical cat keeps interupting and changing things with a red marker.  A very funny story!  Who's story will win Chester's or Melanie's.  There are also 2 very funny sequels.
